When real life isn't real enough.

I'm Luke. I'm 19. I'm a pretty cool guy and stuff. Ask me things. Let's be friends.

holy shit this is me lol

ok so i swing the wiimote to hit a guy, but he blocks it
so ok, i have to hit him from the opposite side that he’s currently blocking
so i go to move the wiimote to the other side of me so i can swing from that side and hit him
but while im moving Link is like “HRAHHH” and attacks anD FUCK
this shit happens to me every time, im not sure how they managed to make fighting some of the simplest enemies so frustrating
WHY MOTION CONTROLS GENERALLY CONTRIBUTE TO BAD GAME DESIGN:
They punish the player for things that aren’t their fault, be it from the movement not being registered properly or from the movement being registered too late.
Motion control CAN be executed properly but it’s very hard to do, especially when it’s a core mechanic of the game.
Let’s take No More Heroes on the Wii as an example of a game that does it right. It is sword fighting game that basically has you fighting with a lightsaber. You attack by pressing A and can control “high attacks” and “low attacks” by holding the wiimote upright or by lowering it so that it’s pointed at the TV. When you finish an enemy, you’re prompted an arrow telling you which direction to swing the wiimote which will quickly execute the finishing move. That is the extent of the motion controls in No More Heroes and it doesn’t need anymore than that. It’s quick, satisfying, doesn’t break the flow and, most of all, makes the player feel like they are completely in control of their actions
Contrast this with the sword fighting in Zelda (particularly Skyward Sword) and some of the console’s earlier games that it prefers to shamefully hide in the closet when relatives come over. In these games, they have you constantly swinging and flailing the wiimote around for each and every single swing of your sword. Not only is this not fun, it gets tiresome very quickly with the same repetitive motions again and again.
Motion control does not add immersion. In most cases it very much takes away from it.

Fuck. Yes. Finally, someone understands me.
